About the Indra API for My Climate View

My Climate View is a free online tool that provides tailored climate insights for Australia's agricultural sector. The tool has been developed by CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology, as part of the Climate Services for Agriculture program, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund. CSIRO's Indra Team has developed and maintains the Indra Climate and Hazard Risk Analytics Engine, a geospatially enabled data platform that powers the insights across a collection of tools. The Indra API is the data feed that flows from the Indra platform to the My Climate View tool.

Overview of data available via the API

The Indra API for My Climate View provides access to location-based (point-based) climate data for Australian locations. Historical climate observations and climate projections are available for a range of general, hazard-related, and agriculture-related datasets.

Historical observations and climate projections

Historical observations are available for all datasets dating back to 1961, with temperature and precipitation datasets extending back to 1910 and 1900, respectively. CMIP5 projection data is available for the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emissions scenarios for the 2030s, 2050s and 2070s epochs. Data is available for a variety of climate models selected to be representative of the range of seasonal temperatures and rainfall across Australia. Please refer to the User Guide for further details and our recommendations regarding best-practice use of projection data.

  • monthly data (except for ETo which only has daily data)
  • aggregated data for various timeframes (date range, month range, seasonal and annual)
  • number of days that meet a specified threshold or combined threshold, over various timeframes (date range, month range, seasonal and annual)
historic observations of:
  • daily data (excluding average temperature)
Hazard-related data
  • heatwaves
  • cold exposure
  • extremes (precipitation and temperature)
  • Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI)
  • Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI)
  • decile-based drought* indicators
historic observations and projections of:
  • monthly SPI and FFDI values
  • date range, month range, seasonal and annual data for:
    • number of heatwaves (events that meet specified temperature and consecutive-day thresholds)
    • number of cold exposure days (where Chill Index > 1100)
    • precipitation extremes (highest daily precipitation amount in 1-day and 5-day periods)
    • temperature extremes (highest and lowest daily maximum and minimum temperatures)
    • SPI event count data (excluding date range data)
  • multi-year range data for:
    • SPI drought/pluvial flooding events (summary data only for projections)
    • low-rainfall drought* and compound hot-dry events (observations only)
    • low-rainfall drought intensity (average monthly rainfall deficit during drought)
    • time in low-rainfall drought and hot-dry events (months per 30-year period)
Agriculture-related climate data
  • Growing Degree Days (GDD)
  • Temperature–Humidity Index (THI)
  • chill accumulation (Chill Portions)
historic observations & projections of:
  • date range, month range, seasonal and annual data for:
    • growing degree days using the specified base and (optional) upper threshold temperatures
    • number of days at or above a specified THI threshold
  • restricted month range data for:
    • Chill Portions: March-June, March-July and March-August

* The API provides drought-related data to deliver insights into past and future drought conditions. It does not determine whether a location is in drought, or apply formal drought classifications. The Australian Government does not make drought declarations.

Geographic coverage and spatial granularity

The API’s datasets include all of mainland Australia, Tasmania and nearshore surrounding waters. All data is returned at a 5 km2 gridded scale, which enables users to extract data for specific locations. See the User Guide for further details.

Supporting documentation

The User Guide provides information from both scientific and software engineering perspectives. It contains details about the data sources and selection methodology, data calculation methods and best practice usage recommendations. It also explains the structure of the API (endpoints and variables) and provides client code examples, as well as some examples of how the API is used in the My Climate View tool. The API testing interface (Swagger UI) is an interactive form of technical documentation that explains how external systems can connect to retrieve data.

Accessing the API

The Indra API for My Climate View is free to use but requires an access key.
